Police Advising

Having retired as a Chief Superintendent with Sussex Police and the police commander for Brighton and Hove for the last four years of my service, I have been a principle procedural advisor to the internationally best selling crime author Peter James. I advise him on plots and provide  detailed guidance and feedback during the drafting of his novels, the last eleven of which are number one best sellers. Prior to that, while still in the police, I supported him and assisted in his extensive research.

I have also advised other authors such as Susan Wilkins (The Killer), William Shaw (The Birdwatcher), Robert Bryndza (The Night Stalker and The Missing Girl) and P D Viner (Summer of Ghosts.)  Additionally I have helped the actor Gray O’Brien in his depiction of Detective Superintendent Roy Grace in the stage play ‘Dead Simple,’ using my experience as an officer of that rank, to help him play the part in a true-to-life way.

I have a reputation for not only providing procedural advice and guidance but also helping authors with suggestions on their narrative to keep it faithful to the ‘real world’ yet still sustaining its pace and direction. I know, from bitter experience, that some parts of policing can be dull and authors and screen writers can’t be bogged down with that. They need to be able to keep the reader or viewer engaged without scoring own goals around authenticity, and I keep this principle central to my advice.

I have a vast and wide experience in all aspects of policing from being a beat bobby through to being a detective, a murder senior investigator, a public order and firearms commander and running the policing in a large, diverse and challenging city. Uniquely I am the only officer, in the last 40 years, to have served at every rank from PC to Chief Superintendent at Brighton and Hove. Also, unlike many existing police advisors, I have great experience with some top authors helping them hone their genre.
